In early January 2026, Hulu’s “Tell Me Lies” returned for its highly anticipated third season, revealing an even darker and more intense chapter than before. The series, which is based on Carola Lovering’s 2018 novel and created for television by Meaghan Oppenheimer, has captivated viewers with its raw and often provocative portrayal of toxic relationships, obsession, and the aftermath of reckless decisions. Fans are now witnessing the fallout from previous seasons, with the cast hinting at explosive confrontations and consequences that threaten to unravel the lives of the main characters. As the storyline delves deeper into the chaos and trauma of its characters, viewers are left to grapple with the darker themes and unpredictable twists that define this season.

Season 3 Picks Up With Lucy and Stephen Reunited

The opening episodes of Season 3 pick up immediately after the tumultuous events that closed out Season 2, with Lucy and Stephen back in each other’s lives, despite the destructive history that binds them. The premiere episode, titled “You F—– It, Friend,” resumes on Bree’s wedding day, setting the tone for what’s to come. Viewers see Bree, the bride, overhearing Stephen’s voicemail with Lucy’s name still on his phone. Bree’s awkward interactions with her friends immediately hint at the complex emotional entanglements, notably her candid confession that she considers herself “a terrible person.”

The episode flashes back to 2009, portraying Bree’s life after ending her affair with Oliver, her professor’s husband, and her breakup with Evan. During these flashbacks, Bree wakes up next to Lucy during Christmas break, illustrating the close bond and turbulent relationship that persists between the two women. Meanwhile, back in the present, Stephen and Lucy’s relationship is reignited, as they decide to give their emotional chaos another chance, despite knowing how toxic their connection has become. Bree, confronting her own past, eventually marries Stephen in 2015, and makes her vows — surprisingly, saying, “Of course, I do,” as Stephen looks on.

In the subsequent episode, tensions escalate further, especially when Stephen discovers that Lucy had slept with Evan. Stephen confronts her, leading to a moment of attempted reconciliation where he states, “We’ll see how this goes,” but the underlying resentment soon bubbles to the surface. Their relationship, already strained, disintegrates as Stephen grows increasingly resentful and manipulative. The dynamic between Lucy and Stephen turns more volatile, with Stephen becoming more controlling and humiliating towards Lucy, and their interactions become a dangerous game of manipulation and power.

Season 3 not only revisits the devastating dynamics between Lucy and Stephen but also explores new relationships and rediscovered bonds. One of the season’s most poignant moments occurs midway through the premiere, when Wrigley and Bree share a spontaneous, intimate exchange at a bus stop, set to the song “New Slang” by The Shins. Both characters are high on MDMA, and their conversation reveals Wrigley’s grief over his brother Drew, played by Benjamin Wadsworth, and Bree’s curiosity about her biological mother.

Creator Meaghan Oppenheimer explains that this scene was a deliberate choice to showcase a genuine and untainted connection between two characters who are otherwise entangled in complicated romances. “They are also the only two characters that have not ever intentionally done something to harm anyone else in the ensemble, so it felt like they deserved that pure connection,” she says. This moment highlights how, amid the chaos, genuine human connection persists, offering a fleeting sense of relief from the show’s darker themes.

Adding to the cast’s complexity, the third season introduces Costa D’Angelo as Alex, a former foster care friend of Bree’s who is now a college student and drug dealer. Alex’s storyline begins to unfold in Episode 2, as Bree invites him to a party and suggests Lucy should find a rebound. Lucy, in turn, ends up reconnecting with Alex, sharing an intimate moment that culminates in her waking up in his apartment and having sex with him by the episode’s end—marking a potential turning point for her character.

Escalating Tensions and Dark Revelations

The final episode released by Hulu this season brings the series to a new level of darkness, with Stephen forcing Lucy into a confession video where she admits to lying about Lydia’s younger brother, Chris, sexually assaulting her at a party. Lucy initially fabricated the story to protect Pippa, her close friend, but Stephen’s blackmail leaves her no choice. He threatens to reveal her lie to Bree unless she complies, putting her under significant emotional pressure.

Furthermore, the season reveals Stephen’s increasingly sinister side as he manipulates those around him, pushing Lucy into a corner from which she struggles to escape. The episode underscores the dangerous power dynamics at play, with Lucy’s emotional health hanging in the balance and her future uncertain. The blackmail twist leaves viewers questioning what steps Lucy will take next to free herself from Stephen’s grip.

Will There Be a Season 4?

As of January 2026, Hulu has not officially announced whether “Tell Me Lies” will return for a fourth season. Series creator Meaghan Oppenheimer remains tight-lipped, stating that “the future is anyone’s guess.” She clarifies that the season 3 finale was always intended to serve as a meaningful conclusion, noting, “That was the ending I had pitched and planned for a long time.”

Oppenheimer emphasizes that while some storylines are wrapped up, the team is currently focused on promoting and celebrating season 3. She acknowledges the show’s intense and challenging nature, hinting that the narrative’s open-ended elements leave room for potential future development but stops short of confirming renewal plans. Fans remain eager, hoping that the series’ dark, compelling journey will continue, but for now, the fate of “Tell Me Lies” remains uncertain.
