Journeying to the Washington beautiful islands takes a bit of forethought, but that’s part of their appeal.

Ferries

One of the more popular ways to get out and see these islands is by hopping on a Washington State Ferry from Anacortes that sails you over into The San Juan Islands which we have done, along with countless others as some 5000+ visitors flock here during summer months daily! Ferries operate several trips per day, and it is highly advisable to book ahead especially on high season.

Whidbey Island can be reached by ferry from the south end or by car via the Deception Pass Bridge on the north end.

Flights

San Juan Islands can also be reached by small plane or seaplane from Seattle, other nearby cities. A more expensive, but quicker alternative to the ferry.

Car Rentals

A car is the easiest way to get around once you are on the islands. Rent a car on the mainland and take it with you onboard the ferry, or rent a car at larger islands like San Juan or for those headed to Whidbey.

Accommodation Options

The islands in Washington offer a variety of accommodations ranging from simple to deluxe.

Hotels and Resorts

For a luxurious island getaway, spend the night at Friday Harbor House on San Juan Island, the Inn at Langley on Whidbey Island or Outlook Inn in Eastsound (but really Orcas Island).

Bed and Breakfasts

Opt for a more intimate stay with one of the ultra-charming bed and breakfasts sprawled across the islands, like Tucker House Inn on San Juan Island or Anchorage Inn on Lopez.

Vacation Rentals

If you want something home-away-from-home like, rent a holiday house or cottage on one of the Islands around Washington Indicated if it is the perfectly choice for families, group of wildlife lovers or seeking to have their privacy in a space.

Best Travel Tips & Suggestions

This also means arranging ferry tickets well in advance, especially during the busiest summer months.

Bring layers as the weather frequently changes and you may head out in the morning with mist only to have it burn away by noon.

Please help to protect the natural habitat of these islands by leaving them as you found them: take nothing but photos, and leave your campsite cleaner than when you arrived.

Visit farmers markets for produce or shop at artisan shops and have dinner in a small, local restaurant to support them.

This may be a great time to disconnect (cell service can be spotty across the islands) and slow down, take it easy on nature re-load.

Final Words

The islands in Washington provide a truly magical getaway from the frenzy of normal daily life. From their natural beauty to the outdoor activities, and even their quaint island communities… visitors wont be able to forget these Pacific Northwest gems once they see it for themselves. With an array of activities for adventure seekers, relaxation lovers, or a mix in between the Washington State islands are worth considering. Plan your island escape now, and experience the magic of these incredible destinations!
